Coming Soon to DVD   20th Century Fox Home Entertainment's Peter Staddon regularly embraces online fan communities in an encouraging effort to explain the endeavors of the company.  Recently, Staddon has been providing support to rumors that Millennium will be released on DVD in 2003.  In a December 2nd Home Theater Forum chat Staddon was asked whether or not Millennium was, in fact, being prepped for release on DVD.  "That is another TV series I would love to see on DVD," Staddon answered.  "The first two seasons were outstanding. I think you will see season one in 2003 and depending on how that sells we will release subsequent seasons."  In response to queries regarding whether or not Millennium would be presented in a 16x9 widescreen ratio if it was shot in that format Staddon replied, "If it was filmed in 16x9 it will be released in 16x9!"  This is encouraging news, to say the least, and with Staddon's strong support Millennium may soon be available to fans worldwide in the optimum format.  Visit the Home Theater Forum for the complete chat transcript or the Futon Critic for a listing of 20th Century Fox's planned 2003 releases, including Millennium: The Complete First Season.

Millennium on DVD in 2003?   Rumors concerning a highly anticipated Millennium DVD release gained weight earlier this year when the often reliable Digital Bits website claimed that efforts to get the series released were underway at Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.  Yesterday, in an update of the Digital Bits Rumor Mill section which focused on those releases expected from Twentieth Century Fox at the start of 2003, the site reinforced such claims.  "Looking down the line, word is from our sources that Chris Carter's Millennium is also being prepped for DVD release before the end of 2003," the site declared in its November 11th update.  Digital Bits editor Bill Hunt was unable to elaborate on that vague notice for the Abyss.  "You have all the information I can give you at the moment," Hunt stated.  "All I can tell you right now is that Millennium on DVD is moving forward."  Until such claims can be otherwise substantiated, this recent news seemingly serves only to strengthen the internet hearsay and conjecture concerning Millennium's future.

Henriksen Back as Bishop?   According to Dark Horizons' latest batch of news and rumors, actor Lance Henriksen may be adopting his android persona, Bishop, one more time.  The project he's reportedly set to appear in is the long awaited big screen interpretation of the popular Aliens vs. Predator video games, crossovers which pit two of science fiction cinema's most popular modern monsters against each other.  "Lance Henriksen has apparently signed on for the teamup film," announces Dark Horizons.  The word comes from British cinema magazine Total Film and has yet to be confirmed by additional sources.  Frank Black aside, Henriksen's performances as the android Bishop in Aliens and Alien3 represent the role for which he is perhaps best known to movie audiences around the world.

Henriksen Turns Garbageman   Lance Henriksen is busier than ever, signing up for new movie roles with astounding frequency.  The latest addition to his exceedingly long list of films is, unsurprisingly, a low budget horror sequel.  Some fans might argue the actor's recent efforts emphasize quantity over quality.  Regardless of each film's apparent worth, however, Henriksen's performances remain consistently impressive and always entertaining.  Lance will appear along with Amanda Plummer and John Kapelos in Mimic: Sentinel, the second direct-to-video sequel based on the 1997 science fiction thriller.  Filming has begun in Bucharest, Romania and will continue until the end of October.  Credits currently list his character in the film simply as Garbageman, perhaps not his most challenging role.  Further information on this and a multitude of other upcoming Lance Henriksen releases will be posted as it becomes available.

Millennium and Manhunter   With the premiere of Red Dragon and the return of Hannibal Lecter to the big screen, thoughts are turning once more to the origins of the serial killer genre of thriller.  In a recently aired National Public Radio review of the film David Edelstein criticizes Red Dragon while comparing and contrasting it with Manhunter, Michael Mann's 1986 version of the same tale, and, in the process, drops the name of Chris Carter's own foray into the genre. "[Manhunter] led to C.S.I. and John Doe and Profiler and Millennium and all the other movies and TV shows that didn't just borrow from Harris' plot, they borrowed Mann's movie underpinnings," Edelstein explains.  "After this, thrillers would not only get fetishistic about autopsy rooms and elements of forensics, they would fixate on that single haunted protagonist; someone who would wander fresh murder sites and stare at glossies of victims and relive the slaughter from the killer's point of view; someone who would be able, at a terrible cost, to plunge deep into a psycho's roiling psyche."  Watching Red Dragon at the local theater while remember both Thomas Harris' novel and Mann's Manhunter is sure to illuminate the inspirational source of many Millennium elements for fans, particularly those seen during the show's series finale.  The entire NPR review is available online in Real Audio format.

A Change of Face   Those fans who regularly enter the Abyss via fourthhorseman.com, my personal website, will have already noticed that a new introduction webpage has been created for this website.  While the site's new entrance serves merely as a splash page of sorts and doesn't offer any exceptional new information or links it does present visitors with some nice graphics and a format based, with some degree of bitter pride for our under-recognized series, on the official Ten-Thirteen website for The X-Files.  It's also my way of testing the waters for a possible move of this, the Abyss main page, to a new server.  When visiting or bookmarking the Abyss, feel free to enter through the new introduction page to keep abreast of the most notable recent updates.  Comments, as always, are welcome.

Quoth the Saver   After the Millennium Group's personalized computer systems featured prominently in the series, one type of download that's always in demand among online fans is the Millennium based screen saver.  The Millennium Collections website, already featuring a simple Ouroboros screen saver, has recently unveiled its latest original creation, a screen saver which primarily features each and every one of the thought provoking quotes Millennium showcased before its episodes.  As webmaster Matt Bunch describes it, "It's truly a screen saver that you can't take your eyes off of."  Visit Millennium Collections now to download the screensaver for your PC.

The Music of Millennium   Today I'm proud to announce that an all new Abyss extension devoted to the music of Millennium is now online.  While it's been my goal to create an Abyss subsection offering an MP3 library for some time the difficulties of hosting such files have kept such a plan from being put into action.  The Abyss' new Millennial Music section will regularly rotate its downloads, offering visitors the opportunity to obtain samples of the show's soundtrack, songs overheard on the series, and the occasional odd entry which matches the show's unique themes.  The first song posted for download is, quite naturally, the extended version of Mark Snow's theme to Millennium.  Regular notices will be posted here when each new download is made available.  Visit the Millennial Music section now to hear the extended Millennium theme and feel free to contact me with comments, concerns, or suggestions.

The One Was Not the One   The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror handed out the 28th Annual Saturn Awards Monday night and, unfortunately, the creative duo of Glen Morgan and James Wong left this year's ceremony unrecognized.  While Morgan and Wong were awarded the Best Horror Film Saturn for Final Destination one year ago, this year's award for Best Science Fiction Film was given to the producers of A.I.: Artificial Intelligence rather than their outlandish adventure, The One.  Those nominees associated with Ten-Thirteen Productions and The X-Files' final season also went unawarded.  For a complete listing of this year's genre winners visit Cinescape online.

The Lance Cowboy   When we last heard from Lance Henriksen he was on location in Croatia shooting the post-apocalyptic science fiction adventure A Man Called Rage.  Now, Henriksen's official website has announced that he's currently in central California donning a cowboy hat once more for his next project.  Hallmark Hall of Fame has begun production on the latest in their ongoing series of television movies, The Last Cowboy.  Henriksen will star in the film as Will Cooper, the title character.  Despite the fact that fans have yet to see many of his recent films released, the actor's shooting schedule remains busy.  Further information and photos from Lance's work on The Last Cowboy are forthcoming and will be posted as they become available.

Now You See It...   I've been getting many concerned e-mails recently regarding the temperamental status of this website.  The servers which host the Abyss main page and several of its subsections have been experiencing periodic glitches recently.  The site often goes down for brief periods of time, causing it to appear as if the site has been removed or deleted.  Thankfully, the site is still intact and usually returns moments later.  I apologize for the inconvenience.  If this momentary downtime happens to occur again simply wait a few moments and try to reload the site.  Rest assured I'm investigating ways to solve the problem.  Thank you for your patience.

Share and Share Alike   With the series almost completely unavailable in the United States and most of the world, Millennium fans must now use technology to share the episodes of their favorite show.  One way to obtain video clips or complete episodes on your computer is to familiarize yourself with the operations of the binaries newsgroups.  Fans like Grace Wong regularly post MPEG2 files of Millennium episodes to the Usenet for other fans to download.  Learn the ins and outs of such downloads with this FAQ, then visit the alt.binaries.tv.millennium newsgroup or the alt.binaries.multimedia.horror newsgroup to seek out the most recently posted Millennium material.

From 1013 to R.H.D./L.A.   With the detective drama C.S.I. (often featuring prominent former Millennium director Thomas J. Wright) consistently delivering high ratings to CBS, the network has filled their fall schedule with similar crime dramas.  Perhaps the most notable is R.H.D./L.A., a look at the workings of the Robbery and Homicide Division of the Los Angeles Police Department created by Michael Mann.  The new series is already becoming well connected to Millennium and The X-Files The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Ten-Thirteen Productions President Frank Spotnitz will team with Mann for the project and has signed on as the series' executive producer.  Additionally, R.H.D./L.A. will star Millennium's Klea Scott as Detective Sonya Robbins.  Scott, quickly becoming a veteran of police drama, will appear week after week alongside actor Tom Sizemore.  Visit CBS for more details on the upcoming series, which will premiere sometime this fall.

End of an Era   As fans of The X-Files take to the net today to discuss and debate last night's events they are filled with one certainty: for better or for worse, The X-Files has ended.  "The Truth," the final two hour episode of the series which made television history while creating a name for Chris Carter, closed the case files forever after nine years.  The Abyss extends its gratitude to the creative team of Ten-Thirteen Productions for bringing us so many enjoyable paranormal adventures during the last decade.  Unlike Millennium, however, this series will not be quickly discarded or forgotten.  Visit the official site or The X-Files Haven for news, goodies, and chat.  The truth is out there.

Millennium Memories   The most recent issue of The X-Files magazine takes a rare turn at analyzing its sister series, Millennium.  A lengthy interview with Lance Henriksen offers a glimpse back at the actor's three years of work on the series.  "Millennium did exactly what it was supposed to do," a satisfied Henriksen states.  "There are some of those episodes where we stood back and went, 'Wow, we got a lot done in that show.'"  Henriksen discusses several topics, including his views on the character of Frank Black, the direction of the show's stories, and the possibility of returning to television work.  Additionally, the magazine features an article focusing on famed FBI profiler John Douglas.  Look for the issue on your local newsstand.  For those unable to find a copy of the magazine in print, The X-Files: The Search Continues website has made the article available online in three scanned portions (one, two, three).

Turning Japanese   While there's been no recent news regarding the potential for an official Millennium DVD release from 20th Century Fox, fan attention continues to be attracted by the Japanese DVD box sets of Millennium episodes which regularly appear on online auction sites.  Many cautious consumers have a number of questions concerning the quality and nature of this mysterious collection which, thus far, has been shrouded in internet rumor.  An extensive review of these episode discs exclusive to the Abyss has been added to the articles section today, designed to help fans answer these very questions.  Read the article to gather the facts on the Japanese Millennium DVDs before placing your online bid.

Millennial Maintenance   A little maintenance has been undertaken here at the Millennial Abyss.  After being alerted that fragments of the episode guide had disappeared I've taken the time to click through the guide and ensure all pages, graphics, and links are online and operational.  Additionally, all of the third season episode photographs have been reinstated.  The photographs and full episode transcripts from seasons one, two, and three are all online.  The airdates schedules for the coming weeks are also up to date and it should be noted that the Canadian Scream Channel has relocated their official website and continues to air Millennium, often multiple times a day.  If there are any further problems, please report them.  Thank you.

A Man Called Rage   "The year is 3004 A.D. (After Destruction). The earth's natural resources have been depleted and society has been thrown back into a primitive and anarchistic existence. One tribe dominates society and fights to rid the world of a gentle, genetically enhanced tribe."  Who better to lead such an evil tribe of anarchists in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller than Lance Henriksen?  So reads the synopsis of Henriksen's next film, A Man Called Rage.  Just days after his birthday, Lance's official website reports that he is currently on location shooting the film in Croatia.  He will star alongside Daniel Goddard and, believe it or not, Isaac Hayes.  Director Zachary Weintraub has worked with Henriksen previously on Nature of the Beast.  Further news on the film's content and production will be posted as it's revealed.

Syndication Shiftings   The Abyss recently reported that FX has been actively seeking to auction The X-Files to a competing cable network, a position backed by Chris Carter, who felt the exclusive rights to the series were not earning their full potential while airing on Fox cable.  It was announced this morning that the Sci-Fi Channel has successfully negotiated to own the syndicated rights to all nine seasons, 202 episodes, of The X-Files.  While sharing the series with TNT, Sci-Fi hopes this move will help to place them among the top ten cable networks.  The X-Files should begin airing on TNT and the Sci-Fi Channel weeknights this fall.  The deal may have important repercussions for the fate of Chris Carter's lost shows, including Millennium and Harsh Realm.  FX now owns the cable rights to both series and currently has no interest in airing them, surely despite Carter's objections.  Fans can only hope that Millennium is up for bids and that the Sc-Fi Channel is actively attempting to acquire it as well.  Visit the Sci-Fi Wire for the details on the deal.

MARCH NEWS

March 22nd

Spreading the Word   Various websites tracking the buzz surrounding upcoming DVD releases are beginning to include Millennium: The Complete First Season in their line-ups.  Either this indicates that 20th Century Fox does indeed have the series slated for a much anticipated DVD release later this year or simply that the rumors regarding such a possibility are spreading across the net.  Word of an upcoming release, first noted on the reliable Digital Bits website, has now also been reported by Hollywood Bitchslap and Total DVD.  One site, Future DVDs, has created a page just for the Millennium title and lists a specific release date of December 31, 2002.  No official information has emerged from Fox regarding Millennium on DVD.  As the year continues further evidence will either support or deny the mounting rumors.

Download Death   Fans fond of seeing Lance Henriksen in hardcore horror films can now get their hands on his latest work, Michael Hamilton-Wright's Mangler 2.  "Lance was great," director Hamilton-Wright recently told Fangoria magazine.  "He loved the script.  It's a kind of character I don't believe he's played before."  Lance portrays Badian, strict headmaster of a technologically endowed private school suddenly overcome by a vicious computer virus.  Various reviews have revealed that the film is, as expected, mostly senseless horror fare but that Henriksen's performance is remarkable and truly the high point of the film.  Mangler 2 is now available on video and DVD.

Spotnitz Enters into Ether   Ten-Thirteen Productions President Frank Spotnitz, best known for his constant work on The X-Files, is preparing to make the jump to the big screen once that series reaches its end this spring.  Spotnitz has signed on to write and direct a pair of supernatural thrillers for Dimension Films.  The first of the two, Into the Ether, tells the story of a medical resident who begins a hospital investigation when patients begin dying regularly through unnatural means.  Frank Spotnitz served as a co-producer on Millennium during its three season run and wrote several prominent episodes including "Weeds" and "Sacrament," as well as "TEOTWAKI," "Antipas," and "Seven and One" with Chris Carter.  Visit the Sci-Fi Wire or 13th Street for further news on Spotnitz's recent career move and the upcoming Into the Ether.

They Control the Transmission   There is continued good news for international fans of Millennium and further bad news for viewers in the United States.  First, the bad news.  The FX website has recently pulled Millennium's title from its list of programs.  This fits with the fact that Millennium has been absent from the cable network's schedule for several months now.  U.S. fans eager to see the show again can only hope FX decides to auction the exclusive syndicated rights for the series to another cable network soon.  The good news overseas is that Sci-Fi UK has decided that following the end of season three's current run they will begin to air the first season in its entirety in the same regular timeslot, Tuesdays at 9pm.  Meanwhile, up north, Canada's Scream channel is so pleased with Millennium thus far that they've assured fans they intend to show the series once again, in its entirety, once the current run is complete.  The series airs on Scream every weeknight at 9pm.  As always, the latest listing of showings is available in the Abyss airdates section and I encourage you to contact FX with your thoughts on the show's fate.

He'll Be Back?   Lance Henriksen was most recently spotted attending the premiere of Arnold Schwarzenegger's latest flick, Collateral Damage.  This gave TheArnoldFan.com's Randy Jennings an opportunity to ask Lance a few questions concerning his connections to the Terminator franchise.  Henriksen clarifies he was not at all disappointed when he first heard he was to be replaced by Schwarzenegger as the Terminator.  "Cameron just wanted to do the sketches of Lance as a Terminator and to have the cyborg with a look like Henriksen," Jennings reports.  "Lance claims he was really never seriously considered to play the part of the Terminator."  Instead, Henriksen portrayed a police officer in 1984's The Terminator.  It's possible we may see him appear to reprise his role in the upcoming Terminator 3!  "As James Cameron had helped as an additional writer to the T3 script, Henriksen informed me Cameron was toying around with the idea of having Detective Vukovich return in a wheelchair with some battle damage. As we never do see Detective Vukovich die, but only rather an implied death, many Henriksen fans would love to see a return."  Visit the original article for further comments and a photo of Lance and his lovely wife at the Collateral Damage premier.

Future Fantastic   Amidst a sea of fan speculation, in the wake of Chris Carter's announcement that The X-Files will soon be coming to an end, a rather bizarre report has been circulating X-Files newsgroups purporting that the next television project on the Ten-Thirteen slate will be a re-imagined version of Millennium.  The absurd article, written as if it were an Associated Press report, would be enough to bring any dedicated Millennium fan to tears if it were factual in nature.  The text suggests Carter's new televised work would haphazardly combine characters and themes from both The X-Files and Millennium to create a ludicrous new science fiction series.  Fortunately, there are more than enough obvious clues in this outrageous article, not the least of which are several direct references to the failed NBC series SeaQuest 2032, to prove it is a humorous hoax.  In the interests of dispelling brewing rumors and providing Abyss readers with a good chuckle I've posted the false Associated Press report online.  Read the report, enjoy it for the joke it was intended to be, and count your blessings that Frank Black will not be returning in such a context.

Syndicated Sales Pitch   Variety reported recently that the FX cable network is preparing to offer reruns of The X-Files to competing cable networks.  Variety notes, "Representatives for X-Files creator-producer Chris Carter, a profit participant, made it known to Twentieth [Television] that they thought it would be worthwhile to test the marketplace in the event that another network might be eager to pony up a bigger license fee than the $600,000 an episode being shelled out by FX for The X-Files."  Sources indicate both TNT and the Sci-Fi Channel have placed offers for The X-Files reruns.  FX also currently owns the syndication rights to all episodes of Millennium yet has recently dropped the series from its schedule.  It's conceivable that Millennium could be one of the next shows FX considers selling to another cable network.  Visit Variety for the complete article.

Case Closed   After a nine year run, the series which put creator Chris Carter and Ten-Thirteen Productions into the annals of television history is nearing its end.  Carter has announced that The X-Files will air its final episode this May.  "I look at it as the ninth-inning situation," Carter told reporters.  "I'd rather go out now and celebrate rather than have to make an announcement in the summer.  I want to be able to wrap things up for the fans who have been there from the beginning and throughout.  My determination was to go out with a series of very, very strong episodes that are going to pull a lot of threads together from the last nine years."  The news was reported today by Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and CNN.  Fox Entertainment Television Group chairman Sandy Grushow noted, "[The X-Files] was instrumental in putting Fox on the map, plain and simple.  It helped define the network. It alerted the industry to the fact that we could succeed with a quality drama."  After witnessing the rash and premature cancellation of X-Files successors such as Millennium, Harsh Realm, and The Lone Gunmen, the future of Ten-Thirteen Productions on television is now uncertain.

Pieces on Pottery   While the bulk of the material relates to his work as an actor and his work on Millennium, a portion of the recently published Videoscope magazine interview with Lance Henriksen is devoted to the actor's passion for pottery.  Henriksen has a variety of fascinating things to say about the unique art form which has captivated him for years.  "Anything you do beginning with picking up the clay to the end of the firing can alter the outcome. It's literally recording every thought, every move you make. It's exquisite, it really is."  As always, pieces of handmade pottery from Lance's collection are available for perusal or purchase at his official website.  Pick up the latest issue of Videoscope for more of the actor's thoughts on his art.

Introspective Insight   Millennium fans perusing magazine racks will find their attention being drawn to the current issue of the quarterly Videoscope magazine (Winter 2001/2002).  Lance Henriksen is featured prominently on the cover for the issue contains a lengthy in-depth interview with the actor.  The interview, conducted by Videoscope columnist Tim Ferrante, addresses a number of powerful topics related to the way in which Henriksen views his work on Millennium.  "They never really wanted to show that side," Henriksen commented when questioned whether or not the character of Frank Black was truly capable of happiness. "They never wanted that to happen. You're not seeing him on vacation, you're seeing him in the midst of a war."  Henriksen also seems to agree with the fans regarding his appearance in The X-Files crossover episode.  "I should have asked [Chris Carter], 'In your life, what is closure?'  Because if he means closure in the respect that no one will ever see me again on that show, he's right. But in terms of Frank Black, he didn't do it at all."  Be sure to pick up the latest issue of Videoscope to read the complete text of this insightful interview.  Special thanks are extended to Tim Ferrante and editor Joe Kane for providing the Abyss with a sneak preview of the article's content!

The Shadow Knows   It has been revealed that Terry O'Quinn's guest appearance in "Trust No 1," an upcoming episode of The X-Files, will definitely not mark the return of Millennium's Peter Watts character.  Instead, the talented actor will be portraying the Shadow Man, a mysterious new character.  A recent FOX press release describes the episode's events.  "Contacted by a mysterious man claiming to have information about Mulder and the super soldiers that drove him into hiding, Scully, Reyes and Doggett are forced into an awkward situation with the potential to place Mulder in even more danger.  Though Reyes and Doggett oppose the idea of helping this odd man, Scully's emotional bonds with the father of her child and her intense desire to see him once again cause her to momentarily let her guard down and invite a total stranger into her world of intense secrecy."  This will be O'Quinn's third appearance in The X-Files universe and this time around he will be credited as Terrance Quinn.  Visit the official X-Files website or the X-Files Haven for more information.  The "Trust No 1" episode airs Sunday, January 6, at 9:00pm on FOX.
