Trivial Pursuits   The United Kingdom's Sci-Fi Channel has created a simple trivia contest to promote their weekly showings of episodes from Millennium's third season.  After elaborating upon the background of the series and its star, Sci-Fi UK's website reveals to visitors what Lance Henriksen was working at when not portraying Frank Black.  "With the odd exception, Lance has made a living from playing dark or villainous roles so his alternative career may come as a bit of a surprise -- he is also a master potter." Henriksen has donated six sets of t-shirts and hats, each bearing the logo of his Screaming Red Ass pottery line, to the contest.  Visit Sci-Fi UK's competition page for background information and a chance to win.  The closing date for entries is January 6, 2002.

Limited Editions   Millennium fans should be reminded that limited copies of the impressive m=1000 music project CDR release remain available.  m=1000, using creative collages of sound and music, was able to further explore the artistic tone of the Millennium television series in a powerful way.  This music is not to be missed, especially for those who enjoyed the way in which the sounds of the series were able to establish a meaningful and dramatic mood.  Those interested in obtaining a copy of the disc should immediately contact artist Blithely Menace, compiler of the compositions, for ordering information.

Don't Be Dark   It has been revealed that Mangler 2, a recently completed horror film sequel starring Lance Henriksen, will be released straight to video and DVD on February 19, 2002.  The Toque, an online humor magazine, has taken the occasion of its premier to poke fun at our favorite leading man.  "Lance Henriksen, known for his role of Frank Black in Millennium... may have cause for concern. The actor showed genuine positive emotion during a recent public appearance -- behaviour which could jeopardize his career," the magazine stated mockingly in its December 18th issue.  "Henriksen was caught smirking during the premiere of Mangler 2, where he plays the headmaster of a school whose computer system is infected by a virus.  The 61-year-old actor has made a career of playing solemn and melancholy characters.  Henriksen downplayed the incident by calling the display of cheerfulness 'just a spasm.'"  Millennium fans are fortunate enough to have been able to glimpse that warmer side of Lance which is kept from most of his performances.  For more information on the release of Mangler 2 watch Amazon.com.

The Four Seasons   The virtual fourth season of Millennium has a new home!  Fans will remember that the virtual season was created following the show's cancellation as a means of continuing its characters and themes and bringing closure to its mythology.  The remarkable endeavor, overseen by Matt Asendorf and Dan Owen, attracted great attention and was discussed in such prominent publications as The New York Post, Details, and Salon.com.  All twenty-two of the season's well crafted original teleplays have now been archived in a new Millennial Abyss subsection.  Further content pertaining to the virtual fourth season of Millennium will be added to the Abyss in the near future.  For now, you can click your way to the new virtual season section and examine the archived scripts, critical reviews, and print ads which are currently available for each episode.  Special thanks go out to executive producer Matt Asendorf, whose dedication to the Millennium fan community has made the preservation of this material possible.  Enjoy!

All in a Day's Work   Chip Johannessen, the talented writer who scripted fourteen Millennium episodes and served as executive producer for the show's third season, has apparently been added to the writing staff of FOX's unique new drama 24.  Johannessen wrote last week's episode of the real time serial drama, "4AM - 5AM."  Additionally, the episode was directed Winrich Kolbe, the first season Millennium director who helmed such episodes as "Kingdom Come," "Lamentation," and "Broken World."  It's uncertain what the extent of Johannessen and Kolbe's participation will be for the remainder of the show's season.  Fellow longtime Ten-Thirteen veterans Howard Gordon and Bryan Spicer contributed to last night's episode, "5AM - 6AM."  For information on upcoming episodes, or for a schedule of 24 encore showings, visit FOX's official website for the series.

A Ghost of Christmas Past   As fans in the United States are well aware, the FX cable network which possesses the syndicated rights to Millennium dropped the series from its regular schedule several months ago without explanation.  Now, FX has scheduled a single Millennium airing before the close of 2001.  On December 25th, Christmas Day, FX will air the third season holiday themed episode "Omerta" at 1:00am.  Whether or not this scheduling decision indicates FX is interested in continuing to air the series in the future remains to be seen as no solid scheduling information has been provided yet for 2002.  Fans are encouraged to contact FX to clearly voice their interest in seeing the series return to television.

Music for Millennium   Some time ago, artist Blithely Menace introduced internet audiences to a project designed to pay tribute to Millennium through creative collages of sound and music.  m=1000, a collection of powerful and haunting compositions, proved to be a stunning endeavor.  The tailored songs acted as a fitting homage to the Millennium series, its atmospheric tone, and its strongest themes.  Now, by popular demand, the unique music of m=1000 will be available as a limited CDR release.  Those interested in obtaining a copy of the m=1000 disc should contact Blithely Menace for further information.  Our thanks, as always, to him for the passionate creative efforts which have made this remarkable artistic exploration available to the Millennium fan community.

In the Sci-Fi Spotlight   The United Kingdom's Sci-Fi Channel, continuing to bring episodes to British audiences for the first time, has listed Millennium among their December highlights.  The official website boasts, "The UK premiere of season three continues on Sci-Fi this month with Frank and Emma attempting to bring to justice more sordid and twisted American types. This month's episodes also include the Christmas episode, 'Omerta' (18th, 9pm)."  Visit the Abyss airdates section for the month's schedule or the Sci-Fi UK website for further details.

Devilish Déjà Vu   Millennium fans who tuned in to see last week's episode of The X-Files, "Dæmonicus," may have thought they were seeing a passed over Millennium script resurrected in new context.  In the new season, Annabeth Gish and Robert Patrick seem to be filling familiar roles while investigating instances of supernatural evil.  Whether or not the fans agree, perhaps as a result of the series' recent change in tone, creator Chris Carter believes there are plenty of tales for the ongoing X-Files to tell.  "There's still a tremendous number of stories that can be told.  The trick is exploring them with this new cast of characters," Carter recently said. "The only reasons I stay are that I feel a tremendous loyalty to the people I work with."  Further episode throughout The X-Files' ninth season are sure to exhibit continued similarities to Millennium, including "Lord of the Flies" and "Hellbound."  Visit the official X-Files website for further information.

From the Potter's Studio   Lance Henriksen, while not acting before a camera, continues to indulge his creative interests and prove himself to be a masterful potter.  Those pieces of stoneware created by Henriksen have clearly exhibited a unique and impressive artistic style.  With the holidays fast approaching, recently Lance has been working to make sure plenty of hand made pottery is available for those fans interested in purchasing unique gifts.  Specifically, new items have recently been added to his one of a kind gallery and he is preparing to introduce his new Yellow Jacket line.  Visit Lance's official website, bylancehenriksen.com, to have a look at the pieces of the collection which are available.

NOVEMBER NEWS

Television of Tomorrow   Despite continuing to bring in millions at the box office and a full slate of upcoming motion pictures in development it looks as if former Millennium executive producers Glen Morgan and James Wong will continue to develop television shows for the major networks.  Their latest pilot is being developed in conjunction with former NASA scientist Gentry Lee and is based on his latest science fiction novel"It's sort of a historical perspective of the future," Wong told the Sci-Fi Wire. "It's really a kind of family drama set in the future, with the implications of what the future brings... and sort of the ethical and moral problems, and also the day-to-day problems, that Gentry has envisioned in the near future or the next 100 years."  The new series is presumably being developed as a part of the duo's development deal with DreamWorks and NBC which previously produced the supernatural television drama The Others.

Peter and the Pigskin   Millennium's Terry O'Quinn is currently completing work as the star of Hometown Legend, a high school football drama scheduled to hit select theaters in January.  The film's official website has endless praise for the talented actor.  "Terry O'Quinn portrays Buster Schuler," the site explains, "the legendary coach who comes out of retirement for Athens' last season.  Director James Anderson wanted someone who had a presence even when he wasn't speaking... Although Coach Schuler is a departure from his normally more reserved roles, O'Quinn gives a phenomenal, dominating performance that, if promoted, could generate award buzz."  Millennium fans know fully well how dominating the man's presence can be.  Visit the official Hometown Legend website for more information on the production of the film, its release, and Terry O'Quinn's participation.

Make the Trade   Looking to complete your personal Millennium video collection?  Unable to obtain a given episode now that syndicated airings of the show have stopped?  At long last there is a specific community where Millennium fans can unite to exchange videotaped episodes of the series.  "Millennium Collections is now taking members for the episode trading center," announced webmaster Matt Bunch recently.  "It is an encrypted/password protected area where fans with tapes can trade them. Only those with tapes to trade will be granted memberships. I encourage anyone who is looking to complete their collection to check it out."  Visit Millennium Collections to take part in the video trading.

A Time For Thanksgiving   I'd like to take a moment to extend my sincerest thanks to the Millennium fan community for the continued enthusiastic support of the Millennial Abyss website and its ongoing projects.  As a result of the upcoming holiday there will be a pause in the regular Abyss updates until early next week.  You might take this time to connect with fellow fans through the official message forum.  It should also be noted that the FX cable network will be showing the crossover episode, "Millennium," Friday night at 11:00pm as a part of their annual Thanksgiving marathon of The X-Files.  Wait, worry, and enjoy the holiday, ladies and gentlemen.

Black and Beyond   The official website of Lance Henriksen has been updated today with some interesting information on the actor.  The full text of three unique magazine articles, all of which feature Henriksen as their focus and devoted considerable space to discussing his work on Millennium, are now available online. The profiles and interviews presented by GQ, TV Zone, and Entertainment Weekly offer new insight into Lance's thoughts concerning his work as Frank Black.  "It isn't about the millennium finishing," Lance states regarding the show's sudden and untimely end, "it's really something else. The millennium was a good hook but in reality it was about something that is going on all the time. Like, right now there is an awful lot of strange cases going on in America and everywhere else. My biggest hope was that we would have done a Millennium feature film. If anything ever leant itself to a feature it would be Millennium."  Visit bylancehenriksen.com to read more about Henriksen's underappreciated film career and his extensive thoughts regarding the past and possible future of Frank Black.

Tragedy Free TV   The effects of the terrorist attacks against the United States are certainly being felt in Hollywood.  Ten-Thirteen President Frank Spotnitz recently told TV Guide that the way The X-Files deals with depicting evil will reflect such concerns.  "We're working on a mythology [episode] now," Spotnitz said, "and you want to find a way to be thematically relevant and say something true about fighting evil and fanaticism and irrationality, but you want to do it in a way that is appropriate and doesn't trivialize what's really going on in the world. We've got a certain palette to paint on, which is the paranormal, and it just does not feel at all appropriate to mix that with real-life events."  I continue to receive e-mail from fans who've come to realize stunning thematic parallels between Millennium's stories about tragedy and human evil and the true events which are making news around the world.  Millennium always did a powerful job of addressing very real concerns.  We can only imagine how Millennium's creative staff would choose to address these monumental current affairs if the show were still on the air today.

Armageddon On the Air   Looking for some apocalyptic weekend entertainment?  "When a medieval cult undertakes a devious plan to spur Armageddon by summoning the spirit of Nostradamus it's up to a tough homicide detective and a clairvoyant FBI agent to foil the plot before it's too late."  So reads the synopsis of Nostradamus, a 2000 science fiction adventure film starring Rob Estes which will likely appeal to the majority of Millennium fans.  Look for Nostradamus this Sunday night, November 18th, at 9:00pm on the Sci-Fi Channel.

Back to the Big Screen   Chris Carter and Ten-Thirteen Productions are finalizing plans with Twentieth Century Fox to bring The X-Files to movie theaters for the second time.  Both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are currently in talks to star in the coming film, which is expected to be a stand-alone horror story free from the constraints of the convoluted ongoing X-Files mythology.  Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz will write and produce the sequel with an eye toward a 2003 release date.  The first film earned Fox $84 million domestically and the box office success of The X-Files' second motion picture could very well determine the future for further big screen Ten-Thirteen Productions, including the often talked of possible Millennium film.  Stay tuned to Cinescape for more X-Files movie details.

Two's the Charm   Writer/director James Wong has been talking with Cinescape regarding his work on The One and, in an interview released yesterday, he shared his thoughts on Millennium's second season.  Wong remains high-minded regarding the unique characters and powerful themes he helped introduce to the show.  "I was proud of the work we did on Millennium... We brought in, I think, some interesting ideas in regards to the Millennium Group, and about the coming of the millennium and what that means and what that portends. I think it was scary in a very different way than a serial killer stalking you... I think it may have been sometimes a little too intellectual or sometimes too obscure, but on the other hand I think [for] people who really dug it, it was a show that didn’t talk down to you and kind of went for big ideas."  Wong went on to note that, although he and partner Glen Morgan are working on a number of big screen projects, he would not dismiss future television work.  Wong's unabridged comments defending his work on Millennium are available here.

One by One   Millennium's Glen Morgan and James Wong continue to enjoy great success in the feature film industry.  The duo's latest film, The One, fared better than expected for Sony Pictures and debuted strongly in the second spot last weekend, bringing in an estimated $20 million, the largest opening ever for a Jet Li vehicle.  The writing/directing team has already set their sights on their next big screen science fiction tale.  Morgan and Wong Online reports that, in addition to remaking the classic horror films Willard and Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, the duo's schedule now includes a film adaptation of John Kessel's 1983 science fiction short story "Hearts Do Not In Eyes Shine."  The film will the tale of a couple seeking to save their marriage using a form of selective memory erasure and the paranoid troubles they encounter after undergoing the procedure.  More information on Morgan and Wong's upcoming projects will be reported here as it becomes available.

Leading Men Lock Horns   Millennium and The X-Files fans should be thoroughly entertained after a visit to Lance Henriksen vs. Robert Patrick, a website created to decide precisely which stone faced leading man dominates the genre.  Webmaster Vanessa Evans notes the site is devoted to "two of the most underrated and over-productive actors of our time; Lance Henriksen, often described as the king of B-grade horror movies, and Robert Patrick."  In addition to extensive comparison between Henriksen and Patrick's lengthy film résumés there's notes concerning their involvement with Millennium and The X-Files, plenty of great photos, a download area, and a trading board for exchanging films and memorabilia.  It's a creative, amusing, and truly unique website well worth the visit.

Mapping the Multiverse   The One, the latest motion picture from former Millennium writers and executive producers Glen Morgan and James Wong, opens in theaters nationwide this evening.  A sci-fi action adventure based on the idea of parallel universes, The One stars Jet Li, was written by Morgan and Wong, and was directed by Jim Wong.  Reviews of the film thus far have been excruciatingly bad.  Fans of the dynamic duo will, of course, have to make their own judgments.  Millennium viewers will recognize several familiar faces since the film's supporting cast is rounded out by James Morrison ("Dead Letters"), Tucker Smallwood ("Goodbye Charlie"), Kim Patton ("Owls" and "Roosters"), and even features a cameo appearance by writer Darin Morgan.  Visit Sony's official website for the film for more information related to its release or explore Morgan and Wong Online's extensive The One subsection before heading out to the theaters.

He tries to instill the idea that everyone can achieve redemption through self-forgiveness."  No Escape will air tonight at 7:00pm and 11:30pm on the Sci-Fi Channel.

A New Direction   Two of the men who helped lend unique cinematic vision to Millennium as episode directors have moved on to leave their mark on current primetime television.  Thomas J. Wright, the television director who helmed more episodes of Millennium than anyone else, continues to work on the CBS crime drama C.S.I.  Meanwhile, director Ralph Hemecker was recently appointed an executive producer on the TNT series Witchblade.  WB television president Peter Roth states, "Ralph's creative vision, outstanding execution and direction are an integral part of the success of Witchblade. We are delighted that he will serve as executive producer on our second season."  You might have a glance at the creativity these men, and their new shows, have to offer.

Down Under Blunder   There's some good news and some bad news for Australian Millennium fans.  Viewers down under are used to watching the series air each Sunday at 1:00am on Australia's FOX affiliate, FOXTEL.  Unfortunately, it seems FOXTEL has been airing only the series' third season, repeatedly in a seemingly endless loop.  The good news is that, beginning on October 29th, Millennium will be shown at midnight every day of the week on that same network.  The bad news is that they will start showing the episodes in order beginning with the third season premiere.  We can only hope FOXTEL will continuing airing the series, in its entirety, in this new nightly timeslot.  Visit FOXTEL online for more accurate scheduling information or to e-mail your thoughts.

Twice the Terminator   Millennium fans who appreciate seeing Lance Henriksen appear in his countless career film roles will surely remember him as Los Angeles Police Detective Vukovich in James Cameron's The Terminator.  It was one of the minor roles which helped to make his face well known.  A special edition DVD version of The Terminator from MGM Home Entertainment is in stores now.  The new two disc set features plenty of exclusive interviews with cast and crew, documentaries, deleted scenes, and photo galleries from the film featuring peeks at Henriksen's contributions.  Look for a lengthy, in-depth review of the disc and its features at DVD File.

Four Question Inquiry   Timed to coincide with the release of James Cameron's science fiction classic The Terminator on DVD, Entertainment Weekly conducted a brief jocular interview with Lance Henriksen, one of the film's stars, for their most recent issue.  EW's Dalton Ross writes, "Terminator's Lance Henriksen is back -- and was nice enough to answer our stupid questions."  The issue, which includes a brief and rather meaningless nod to his work on the Millennium television series, is on newsstands this week.  Fortunately for fans without quick access to a magazine rack, the entire Q&A session is available online at Entertainment Weekly's official website.

Being Lance Henriksen   Lance Henriksen will be available in an interactive form this winter as the star of Interplay's intense Playstation 2 game Run Like Hell.  A recent online review by Electric Playground notes, "Besides what sounds like brilliant game conception, Digital Mayhem is going about PlayStation 2 production right. They have contracted Lance Henriksen as well as Clancy Brown to do voice acting, and are patterning the art in the game after the work of H.R. Giger, who did the alien creature design in Alien."  Gamers will play as Nick Conner, the character voiced by Lance, thus giving Millennium fans the opportunity to act as their favorite leading man in a thrilling horror scenario.  Visit the newly revamped official RLH website for a detailed flash interface presenting background on the game and select downloads.

The Devil Went Down to Smallville   A pair of familiar faces will be returning to regular network television this fall on the WB series Smallville.  Inspired by characters from decades of Superman comics, Smallville adds yet another paranormal teenage drama to the television line-up and grants two former devils the occasional spotlight. Sarah-Jane Redmond, familiar to Millennium viewers as Lucy Butler and Harsh Realm fans as Inga Fossa, will appear regularly on the series as Nell Lang, aunt to Clark Kent's love interest Lana.  Likewise, John Glover, the talented performer who brought Lucifer to life on FOX's Brimstone, will serve as a role model to young Lex Luthor.  The pilot episode of Smallville, featuring both actors, will air October 16th 9:00pm.

Plan Nine Not Outer Space   Ten-Thirteen Productions' The X-Files is preparing to enter its ninth season on the FOX network.  Numerous new cast members, including Cary Elwes and Lucy Lawless, have been added to the series under Chris Carter's continued guidance.  With the departure of Fox Mulder's character from the series comes a seeming departure from alien inspire storylines and numerous episodes this season, such as "Dæmonicus" and "Hellbound," will deal with religious and moral themes similar to those frequently seen on Millennium.  The parallels between the two series grow stronger.  Visit the official X-Files website for the latest news or to check out the visually stunning season nine promotional photo gallery.  The X-Files will have its ninth season premiere on November 4th.

Henriksen Hits Print   I was contacted recently by Tim Ferrante, a columnist for VideoScope magazine, "the Ultimate Genre Video Guide."  Mr. Ferrante spent some time this past summer interviewing Lance Henriksen regarding his classic film roles, upcoming features, his interest in pottery and, of course, his role as Frank Black on the Millennium television series.  The winter 2001/2002 issue of the quarterly VideoScope will feature the complete Lance Henriksen interview and a related cover.  You can look for VideoScope with its prominent Lance photo cover on magazine shelves, in bookstores such as Barnes & Noble or Borders, this winter.  Get a glimpse of VideoScope magazine online at their official website.

Sands Through the Hourglass   The Millennial Abyss has relaunched its ongoing calendar project!  Designed to provide fans with a decorative Millennium based image on a regular basis, the calendar's visual design will aim to match the feel of both the series and the changing seasons.  The first monthly image, for October of 2001, is currently available for download in the calendar section.  As Halloween approaches set it as your computer's desktop wallpaper or print it out for posting elsewhere.  A new image will be prepared for each month of the year.  Your comments on the project are welcome.  Enjoy!

Around the World   Millennium, despite currently being unavailable to American audiences, continues to air regularly in several nations around the world.  In Brazil, TV Gazeta airs the series' episodes weekly, each Tuesday night at 11:00pm.  In Great Britain, Millennium is currently being shown on a nightly basis, at 1:10am, on Sky One in addition to its weekly Sci-Fi UK airdates.  Specific scheduling information can be obtained by visiting the individual network websites.

Britain Back on Track   The United Kingdom's Sci-Fi Channel, after pre-empting a long awaited airing of Millennium's "The Innocents" and "Exegesis" episodes due to concerns stemming from the September 11th terrorist attacks against the United States, has announced they're ready to move forward with the schedule this evening.  "The opening episode of Millennium season three finally receives it's UK premiere on Tuesday 2nd October, 9pm."  It's expected that Sci-Fi UK will stick to the third season's original broadcast order from this point forward in its weekly timeslot, each Tuesday night at 9pm and midnight.

Library Renovations   The Millennial Abyss fan fiction library, which admittedly has not been updated in well over a year, is the most recent subsection cosmetically redesigned to match this main page.  File links have been checked, story descriptions have been updated, and individual graphics have been added to each listing.  Since the disappearance of the Millennium Compendium site from the web earlier this year, this seems to be the last remaining substantial collection of Millennium fan fiction online.  If it's been some time since you've perused the library's offerings, or indulged in a new story featuring your favorite characters, you might consider picking through the archive and get some reading done.

Out of Order   British Millennium fans viewing the third season of the series for the very first time on the Sci-Fi Channel this September may be feeling a bit discombobulated.  In the wake of the devastating terrorist attacks against the United States, Sci-Fi UK programming executives felt uncomfortable airing the two-part third season opener ("The Innocents" and "Exegesis"), which focused on a tragic airline disaster and Frank Black's participation in the ensuing FBI investigation.  Unfortunately for fans trying to catch-up on the mythology, this pair of episodes also introduced several new themes and characters to the show.  Sci-Fi UK chose to air two random stand alone episodes of the third season in their place.  A glance at the upcoming schedule indicates that starting on October 2nd, with an airing of "TEOTWAWKI," the show will return to its original broadcast order.  British fans will apparently have to wait until and undetermined future date to view the third season premier.  Any questions arising regarding Millennium's arrangement of third season stories should be resolved through an examination of the Abyss episode guideMillennium airs each Tuesday night at 9pm and midnight on Sci-Fi UK.

Hutchison on the Rise   Actor Doug Hutchison, the talented and memorable performer who portrayed the pure evil Polaroid Man stalker on Millennium, is experiencing great success in Hollywood and has a full slate of upcoming film appearances.  Hutchison has seemingly caught everyone's eye after making his mark in The Green Mile.  Doug co-stars with Sean Penn in I Am Sam, a New Line release coming this fall which is being touted as an Oscar contender.  Next, Doug portrays a D.E.A. agent in The Salton Sea, starring Val Kilmer.  Sometime next year we'll see him alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Milla Jovovich in the suspense drama No Good Deed.  From humble beginnings Doug has risen to act alongside Hollywood's heavy hitters.  For more information on these upcoming productions, and to stay on top of Doug's ongoing work, consult the official Doug Hutchison website.

Go Figure   Recently, Twentieth Century Fox Licensing and Merchandising passed the potentially lucrative license for action figures based on The X-Files to Moore Action Collectibles, a rising favorite for genre related releases.  The company has since announced, via their official website, that as a result of discussions between company executives and Chris Carter himself that the initial X-Files release will consist of three character replicas: Walter Skinner, John Doggett, and Maitreya of the episode "Kill Switch."  Quite obviously, M.A.C. figures will not be restricted to the primary cast.  Fans are looking forward to seeing action figures based on many of their favorite guest stars.  Through an open online forum, M.A.C. now seeks input regarding the future of their line-up.  Immediately, the name Frank Black was enthusiastically raised as a suggestion and continuing support has ensued.  Could some of our beloved Millennium characters someday be available in figurine form?  Join in the discussion and let M.A.C. hear your thoughts at Moore's X-Files Forum.

But Is It Art?   Yet another project on Lance Henriksen's increasingly crowded list of recently completed works is the short film Demons on Canvas, produced by Cinemavista Moving Pictures.  As described by the production company, Demons On Canvas is a "dark, urban drama that follows a heroin addict and artist, Nesta, and his malicious benefactor, Lance.  Nesta looks for sanctuary from his personal demons by putting them on canvas, but in the end there is no escape."  Perhaps a familiar plot for enthusiasts of Millennium fan fiction.  Plenty of production information on the short film is available at Cinemavista's website along with several photographs and a complete online trailer which offers a significant glimpse at Henriksen's vicious role in the film.  Special thanks, as always, to Lance Henriksen Web Magic for keeping us apprised.

It's In the Mail   It has been just over a week since the Abyss returned from an extended summer hiatus and I appreciate all of the enthusiastic kind words readers have sent my way.  I must ask for further patience and understanding from those who are awaiting e-mail responses from me.  I'm still attempting to respond to summer mail before it's deleted by my mail service and my amount of incoming e-mail concerning Millennium and this website is always formidable.  Rest assured, I will respond.  Specifically, as much as I hate to use the Abyss as a personal message service, I'm looking to get back in touch with the helpful Abyss reader who offered information on stored Millennium transcripts.  If you are this fan, I've lost your previous message and would appreciate it if you dropped me a new mail.  These notes should not discourage readers from sending in their thoughts, comments, questions, or ideas concerning the future of Millennium online to me at god@fourthhorseman.com.  Thank you.

Syndicated Shutdown   In an ironic twist, just as Millennium prepares to return to television in the United Kingdom it seems poised to drop from United States broadcasts.  After weeks of scheduling neglect, Millennium seems to have been dropped from the FX schedule.  Repeated attempts to contact the cable network regarding their treatment of the exclusive syndication rights to Millennium have been met with no real answers.  There has been no official word regarding Millennium's fate but it's quite possible, with FX ready to launch a new nightly line-up this fall, that this could be the end of our access to regular reruns.  Please, take a few moments today and contact FX (310-789-4640) regarding your continued interest in the series!  Let them know you're a regular Millennium viewer who wants to see the show continue.  On a side note, FX has uploaded a brief online video segment offering behind the scenes insight into The X-Files crossover episode "Millennium" here.

No Deals, Mr. Bond   A rather exciting rumor has surfaced regarding the next film in the James Bond franchise which, for most Millennium fans, could simply be too good to be true.  A tipster for the Dark Horizons website claims to have made contact at an airport recently with Barbara Broccoli, heiress to the title of primary Bond producer.  The eager fan could not resist approaching her and inquiring as to the status of the twentieth James Bond film, the script for which is currently in preparation with production expected to begin early next year.  The conversation's focus soon shifted to the nature of the next film's villain.  Broccoli noted that the producers of the film were looking to depart from patterns set in Pierce Brosnan's last three films, to establish a unique, brilliant, and menacing master criminal more in the tradition of Ian Fleming's early novels.  Broccoli supposedly stated she was specifically looking for someone, "a little older than the average actor/villain role, a good character-actor type. I like Lance Henriksen."  Could 007 be fighting to the death against a maniacal Lance Henriksen on a big screen near you?  The very concept is enough to give us goosebumps.  The Bond rumor mill is always convoluted so, naturally, only time will tell.  Look to Dark Horizons for a longer description of the supposed encounter.

Last But Not Least   For years Millennium fans in the United Kingdom have been kept in the dark, left wondering exactly what transpired during the third and final year of Frank Black's televised life.  The wait is officially over.  The final season of Millennium will have its U.K. premiere this Tuesday, September 18th, on the Sci-Fi Channel.  The event is perhaps best described by the Sci-Fi UK press release, which states, "The millennium may have come and gone but the premiere of the third season of this hard-hitting series has been eagerly awaited in the U.K."  Fans in the British isles should tune in each Tuesday night at 9pm or midnight to catch the next episode in the third season line-up.  For more specific and accurate scheduling information, visit Sci-Fi UK online.

Back to Back   After years of struggling with network television constrictions former Millennium writers and Executive Producers Glen Morgan and James Wong are finally enjoying great popularity and due recognition as feature filmmakers.  Work is nearly complete on their imaginative science fiction epic The One, starring Jet Li.  The film will be released nationwide November 2nd.  Meanwhile, both Dimension Films and New Line Cinema have tapped the dynamic duo to write and produce big screen horror remakes.  Dimension's Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, based on 1973 TV movie, will tell the tale of a young couple battling the mischievous demons inhabiting their home.  New Line's Willard, based on a 1971 film, involves an outcast who trains an army of rats to exact his revenge.  New Line Cinema President Toby Emmerich commented, "These guys are responsible filmmakers and can guarantee that it will be a good movie.  The [Willard] script worked well; it's totally chilling."  James Wong, who is expected to direct both projects, adds, "Dimension and New Line are both masters of the genre, and I'm just thrilled they want to work with us and are giving us an opportunity to do what we love."

Life During Wartime   The world continues to be saddened and stunned a day after the sickening and tragic monumental terrorist attacks against the United States of America.  Today, under the direction of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the nation's law enforcement personnel went to work at what will truly be an immense and unprecedented forensics investigation.  Attorney General John Ashcroft noted that thousands of FBI agents in all of the agency's field offices in the United States and overseas are participating in the investigation, along with the U.S. Marshals Service, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Bureau of Prisons, and multiple other agencies.  The true extent of the consequences of this historic tragedy remain to be seen.  I hope that all Abyss readers and their families are safe and able to recover from these emotional events.  Our message forum is open for any desired communication or expression.  Newly instated FBI Director Robert Mueller swore today, "We will leave no stone unturned to find those responsible for the tragedies."

Henriksen Hemophobia   Lance Henriksen continues to work diligently and his list of upcoming film releases is becoming exceptionally long.  In late July Henriksen returned along with actress Robin Givens from Bulgaria, where the two had been hard at work filming an independent science fiction film entitled Antibody.  "It's a thriller, wildly compelling but not overly bloody," Lance explains, "[My character is] an expert on disarming bombs who is also terrified of blood. When he sees it, he almost passes out."  Millennium fans have many a performance to look forward to.  The Abyss will continue to present updates regarding the release of Lance's upcoming films as the information becomes available.

The DVD Tease   Recent comments suggest that the intensive ongoing efforts of the fan community to make a Millennium collection available on DVD may soon pay off.  When asked in a recent online chat about the possibility of such an official release, Chris Carter stated, "They're talking about Millennium on DVD. Beyond that I wouldn't think there is much hope for Harsh Realm, or Lone Gunmen. But, I think there are a lot of people asking for the Millennium DVD, so I think that will happen."  Several days later, in a conversation taking place in the Home Theater Forum, Fox's Peter Staddon noted that he would like to see Millennium's first season released, in a box set format much like the currently available X-Files full season sets, sometime during 2002.  Hope springs eternal.  Until such a commercial release occurs, we must continue to convince Fox Home Video that the audience is out there.

JUNE / JULY NEWS

July 4th

Once in a Lifetime   The July issue of Britain's SFX sci-fi magazine contains a four page interview with Lance Henriksen during which the man who spent three years portraying Frank Black in more than 70 episodes speaks a great deal about Millennium.  "I felt that Chris Carter wanting to do Millennium was so courageous. He was the only guy who could have gotten it done, and I was happy to be part of that. We went three years so I think it succeeded."  Lance also seems to feel as if Millennium was unique among his other acting experiences.  "It was really strange.  Doing Millennium was like being in some kind of time capsule or space craft. It was like being on another planet, this world didn't exist any more. It was so intense up there. I loved the role, and I loved that amount of work, but the part that started to get to me was that I was so far from home."  It's great to see that Lance looks on his Millennium experience as positively as we appraise his work on the series.  Special thanks to Lance Henriksen Web Magic for staying on top of the news.

Vision Correction   In the recent SFX interview, Lance Henriksen shares that he had a different artistic take on the extraordinary visions of Frank Black than those producing the series.  "You know what? They didn't use Frank's flashes right." Lance comments, "It's like poetry: there are good poems and bad poems. A good poet uses less and less words, and the ones he uses are so specific, they're stunning. You can stop and feel it. With Frank Black, they started using those flashes, which should have been like poetry, to make up for, let's just say, a weak narrative. That bothered me."  Fortunately, this seems to be Lance's only criticism for the otherwise stunningly written and produced television series.

Unfinished Business   Millennium's powerful characters and themes continue to thrive in the minds of writers around the world.  A fan group in France has decided to pull together and write a new alternative virtual season of the series, in place of the show's actual third season, starting this summer.  Amirth, executive producer of the project, states, "Our virtual season will present new characters and new mythology.  We hope this season 'made in France' will be able to interest all the hardcore fans of the show."  Unfortunately, scripts are currently unable to be translated for English readers.  The French virtual season will have its premiere on July 6th.  Be sure to visit their website and take a look at the material being presented.

Last Minute Lance   Lance Henriksen is, without a doubt, one of the hardest working men in Hollywood!  I've just received word from an anonymous Abyss reader that Henriksen arrive at an abandoned military base in Chilliwack, British Columbia, on June 14th to shoot scenes for the upcoming horror film Mangler 2.  Fellow cult favorite Malcolm McDowell was originally contracted to play the part of Headmaster Badian in the film, one of many characters originally created by living legend Stephen King, but was unable to fulfill his obligations.  Fortunately for the frenzied film crew, Lance agreed to appear at the last minute and immediately flew up from Los Angeles to participate.  This gives Millennium fans a fifth film featuring Lance to look forward to in the coming months.  More news on Lance's many upcoming releases will be posted as it becomes available.

Indefinite Destination   Final Destination, the unique horror film helmed by former Millennium writers/producers Glen Morgan and James Wong, took home the award for best horror film at the recently decided 27th Annual Saturn Awards.  Shortly after the ceremony, producer Craig Perry announced that a script is ready for Final Destination 2.  "[The script] was very well received. We are looking for a director. We would love to continue working with Jim and Glen on it, but they have so much effects work on The One, they could never actually help us prep the movie."  Perry neglected to mention that the creative duo has already refused to participate in any effort to spin a sequel from their original work.  For the full story on Final Destination 2's future visit the Sci-Fi Wire.

Start Spreading the News   Good news for Millennium fans living in New York City!  The New York Daily News reported this week that "cable's FX channel got an early Christmas present... when Time Warner Cable of New York announced that it will add FX to its standard lineup in September."  The upcoming addition of FOX's cable extension to Time Warner's New York services will ensure that those night owl viewers in Manhattan will now have an opportunity to watch Frank Black's quest, which continues to air in syndication in the 1:00am timeslot.  FX, and with it Millennium, will appear on Time Warner New York's channel 58 starting September 5th.

New Nightmares   The FOX network has decided to air their Night Visions horror anthology series this summer.  "This gripping anthology series creeps from horror to psychological drama to supernatural adventure, never letting up until the final bizarre plot twist."  The series, hosted by Henry Rollins, will have a two hour premiere on Thursday, July 12th, at 8pm.  Former Millennium writers Kay Reindl and Erin Maher ("Midnight of the Century") are among the talented staff writers following in Twilight Zone footsteps.  One particular episode, "Neighborhood Watch," will feature young actress Brittany Tiplady (Millennium's Jordan Black) in a starring role.  Keep your eyes on the FOX official website for future details.

The Haunting of Henriksen   Lance Henriksen has been telling some pretty spooky tales regarding his work on the upcoming prison thriller Unspeakable, helmed by primary Millennium director Thomas J. Wright.  Lance noted recently how uncomfortable the film's prison based shooting locale could be.  "It was really scary.  We were shooting in the New Mexico State Prison where they had a riot in 1980, which was the bloodiest riot that ever happened in the United States... There were like 35 inmates killed. There are stains on the floor where people were burned. It was really awful."  Many of the cast and crew, including Henriksen, left the recently concluded shoot believing they had had ghostly encounters.  Lance explains, "When the crew was laying cable in the basement one night, one of them was sure he was pushed.  I got the nerve to go down into the bowels of the prison by myself at night with a flashlight. I had gooseflesh on me, then I felt like somebody pushed me in the back. I don't know if it was a muscle spasm or what, but I ran out of there.  The whole cast and everybody wanted to find a big kahuna or somebody to bless the production and keep the ghosts away."

Motion Picture Millennium   Lance Henriksen, working in the Vancouver area to film and promote his upcoming feature film The Untold, recently granted Canadian talk show host Vicky Gabereau an interview.  When asked about his relationship with Millennium creator Chris Carter, who started and maintains the Ten-Thirteen Productions base in Vancouver, Lance reportedly stated that he "was very much looking forward to shooting an upcoming feature film version of the show."  Regardless of how definite the production of a Millennium motion picture is at this point, it is increasingly obvious that the two principal talents involved, Chris Carter and Lance Henriksen, are absolutely enthusiastic about the supposed project.  This is exciting news for Millennium fans hoping the show has a future.  Lance Henriksen went on to state that he would never again work on a television series due to the painstaking scheduling involved.  Visit Dark Horizons for the original Vicky scoop.

Technical Difficulties   Some very unfortunate news has come to light concerning the lost Millennium Compendium webpage once maintained by Matt Asendorf, former home to the Millennium fan fiction archives and virtual fourth season.  Matt has had some ongoing struggles with the Network Solutions company regarding the ownership of his previous domain name, millennium-compendium.com.  The website is now, appallingly yet not surprisingly, routing visitors to a pornographic site!  Matt maintains hope that the website can be restored to its former glory with the proper amount of pressure.  Click here to read the complete story.  Those interested in helping Matt Asendorf, in any capacity, to regain the lost domain name please feel free to contact him.

Lance's Digital Doom   No release date has been set yet for the upcoming Interplay Playstation 2 game Run Like Hell.  One of the title's many selling points, especially for the Millennium fan, is the fact that its cinematic action stars the voice of venerable sci-fi and horror legend Lance Henriksen.  The game is being described by reviewers as an "action/adventure tour de force" achieved through "a system of creepy camera perspectives, suspenseful animation and music and a deep storyline."  Digital Mayhem, the division responsible for creating RLH, has compiled a short video trailer as a teaser for eager gamers. Those interested in the game and Lance's role in its production should visit the official site to have a look at the short promotional footage.

Voices Loud and Clear   After encouraging comments were made by both Lance Henriksen and Chris Carter, Millennium fans have had the itch for a feature film following Frank Black.  Lately, online petitions are giving fans a new way to clearly show their loyalties.  The latest online name list is being organized to support a Millennium movie.  Sue of Web Magic, organizer of the petition, states, "There are clearly enough willing viewers out there to make the movie a financially viable proposition...  we just need to make our voices known!  We will be merging the signatures on this petition with the 200 or so from the previous one and sending the combined 'voice' of Millennium and Lance fans on to the powers that be. You know we can make a difference."  Add your name to the growing list.  Whatever the likelihood of our success it certainly can't hurt.

Sense of Direction   Two of the television directors who brought great vision to some of the best filmed episodes of Millennium are immersing themselves in new creative ventures.  Ralph Hemecker, who directed "The Curse of Frank Black" among others, is writing and directing key episodes of TNT's new Witchblade television series.  Colleague Thomas J. Wright, who put more time in on Millennium than any other director (shooting twenty-five episodes in all!), has moved from CBS' The Fugitive and C.S.I. to helming a new feature film starring none other than Lance Henriksen.  Wright's film, a prison thriller entitled Unspeakable, co-stars Dennis Hopper and is currently finishing production.  More Unspeakable details will be posted as they become available.

The Actor's Actor   The official press kit for Sam Raimi's upcoming The Untold features plenty of background information on the movie's star, Lance Henriksen, including praise from Hollywood's best and brightest regarding his phenomenal acting abilities.  Academy Award winning director James Cameron, who worked with Lance on Aliens, states, "Lance is one of the most creative actors I know. His preparation is detailed, his work is chameleon-like and always memorable, and he inspires those around him with his passion for acting."  Producer Gale Anne Hurd praises, "Lance is the real thing, an actor's actor. His attention to detail and his commitment to breathing life into each character, puts him in the first rank of dramatic actors today."  Untold director Raimi himself adds, "Lance is a whirlwind of talent, a brilliant performer who goes beyond acting. He becomes his character completely, leaving no trace of his former self, making something of every moment on screen."  Any Millennium fan realizes that this boundless praise is, of course, well deserved.  To see the complete background info and photos being used to promote The Untold be sure to visit Lance Henriksen Magic.

CD or No CD?   Earlier this year the Abyss reported that, despite a highly successful fan campaign, FOX had disallowed Ten-Thirteen composer Mark Snow to release a Millennium CD in favor of launching its own soundtrack music centered website.  I recently continued this conversation with our favorite television musician only to find that absolutely no progress is being made.  "As far as the CD's  for the music of the other shows, FOX is being real silent about any music websites and/or releasing any CD's of the other Ten-Thirteen shows." Mark explained, "Now when me or my manager [Robert Urband] call, they get very short and sort of pissed, so we are thinking of other ways around this. But if anything breaks on this front, you'll be the first to know."  Our thanks to Mr. Snow for his continuing efforts.  The Millennium fan community is still thirsty for an official soundtrack CD...

Comic Coming... ?   The question on everyone's mind is, "When is the long awaited first issue of the unofficial Millennium comic book going to be released?"  The answer, unfortunately, is still not in the form of a definite date.  A number of mix-ups and small production problems have plagued efforts to finish the project.  Production of the first issue, art and lettering, has been completed for some time and work is well underway on issues two through four.  Once final copies of the first issue are done printing they will be available for sale exclusively through the fourthhorseman.com website.  The first issue should be fully printed and ready for distribution early this summer.  Rest assured the Abyss will keep you updated on every significant development.  Millennium #1, "Morbidity of the Soul," is presented by Fourth Horseman Comics and was written by Brian A. Dixon, illustrated by Yannick Belzil, with a cover by Jonathan Ian Mathers.

Unbinding Prometheus   The Center for Millennial Studies, based at Boston University, is preparing for a conference to be held this fall.  The CMS will present "Unbinding Prometheus to Build the New Jerusalem: Millennialism, Power and Technology" at Boston University between November 3rd and 6th.  "Millennial beliefs, because they foresee a radical change in this world, often trigger movements that achieve considerable social power, and even, in rare cases, take political power."  There is an open call for papers on a variety of topics, some of which are suggested.  If you're interested in submitting work for consideration, or just interested in attending the festivities, be sure to visit the Center for Millennial Studies on the web.

APRIL NEWS

April 30th

Practicing the Villain   Morgan and Wong alumnus Doug Hutchison, known to the Millennium fan as Frank's early nemesis the Polaroid Man, will be guest starring on an upcoming episode of David E. Kelley's legal drama The Practice.  In the May 6th episode, "Poor Richard's Almanac," Hutchison will appear as a rather nasty drug dealer.  It seems that Doug is stuck with one of Hollywood's nastiest cases of typecasting, unable to escape playing the baddest of the bad on the big screen or small.  Perhaps that's because he plays them so well!  Tune in to ABC at 10:00pm to catch his undoubtedly excellent performance.

The Next Files   Those fans who have, for better or worse, had the patience to stay with The X-Files throughout its eighth season may have noticed some distinctly Millennium-esque trends in the show's mythology adjustments.  In addition to the fact that it seems Chris Carter has reincarnated the abilities of Frank Black in the character of Monica Reyes, ongoing stories involving the new agent and John Dogget are based on themes quite familiar to the Millennium fan.  Could a ninth season of The X-Files, absent of the original leads, become more Millennium like than ever?  Might Carter and crew try to pull Frank Black into a maddening effort to continue the series?  Fans of both shows are speculating on the situation, including Jim Riley and Laura Capozzola in some interesting essays.  Read the facts and theories and worry...

Heaps of Henriksen   With plenty of channels to choose from, it seems that you can't turn on the television these days without finding a Lance Henriksen film airing at that moment.  Here's a look at some of our favorite actor's more notable cable appearances for the end of April.  Tonight the Sci-Fi Channel will air, once again, the horror classic PumpkinheadAliens, starring Lance as the android Bishop, will air on FX Monday, April 30th, at 8:00pm.  The Quick and the Dead, in which Lance appears as the gun slinging Ace Hanlon, will air on TNT Sunday, April 29th, at 8:00pm.  Lance is Chains Cooper in Stone Cold, one of his most evil roles, showing on the Encore movie channel Saturday, April 28th, at 11:40pm.  Lastly, but most recently produced, Scream 3, with Lance as Director John Milton, can be seen on Showtime April 26th at 10:00pm and again on April 29th at 8:00pm.  Always be sure to check your cable guide for our man's countless cable appearances each month.  For a detailed listing of Henriksen's 30 year acting career be sure to visit the Internet Movie Database, and program that VCR!

The Devil Inside   Could an actual force of evil exist in our world, inhabiting those individuals weak enough to succumb to its influence?  The idea on which Millennium was based, and the subject of last night's X-Files episode "Empedocles," occasionally surfaces in real life through circumstances that are undeniably chilling.  A recent attempted murder case in Massachusetts presents us with just such notions.  Patricia Martin was found soaking wet, clutching her grandson and mumbling about Satan shortly after stabbing the boy several times.  Police investigators, after examining all of the evidence, commented, "We don't know what precipitated this."  Visit the Boston Herald to read all of the perplexing facts involved in this devilish mystery.

Feminine Wiles   More news on Kristen Cloke's performance in the Alliance Repertory Company's Seduced (see April 16).  A very favorable review of the former Millennium actress' work has been posted by the L.A. Times, which states, "Kristen Cloke [expertly displays] feminine wiles clad in slinky gowns and casting come-hither stares...Cloke perfectly portrays Miami as a wisecracking, simple ex-showgirl with a baby doll voice but little patience for pretension."  Click here to read the full review and here to see some faint photographs.  Special thanks to Rev. J.L. Byers for the links.

Sail the Slipstream   A new Millennium internet fan site has popped up on the web and is exhibiting frequent activity.  David Rios is now offering fans a website called "Project Slipstream."  Rios describes the Slipstream site as an online magazine, a news and information source for fans of the television shows produced by Chris Carter and Ten-Thirteen Productions which is heavily slanted towards Millennium.  Take a visit to Project Slipstream and peruse the offerings there.

Four of a Kind   The foremost entrance at fourthhorseman.com has been completely redone with a fresh new graphic splash page and now includes a direct link here, to the Abyss.  Hopefully, this will help shave a few keystrokes and mouse clicks off your daily routine.  In addition you will notice a gateway to The Grassy Knoll, a new site which, in part, pays tribute to our favorite computer hacking, conspiracy theorizing geek heroes.  There's not much content at the site right now, and its format will look a little familiar, but it is a work in progress and I intend, over the weeks, to provide some entertaining and unusual material.  Take a peek and enjoy.

Simply Seductive   Here's your chance to see Lara Means live!  Former Millennium star Kristen Cloke, now Artistic Director at the Alliance Repertory Company, is currently starring in the theater's presentations of Sam Shepard's Seduced.  Kristen, wife of writer/producer Glen Morgan, may also be known to fans from her work on Space: Above and Beyond, The Others, The X-Files, and Final Destination.  The Alliance Repertory Company, located at 3204 West Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank, California, is showing performances Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm, Sundays at 7:00 pm.  Tickets can be obtained by calling 323-655-8587.  Special thanks to Kate Duncan for staying atop the Morgan and Wong alumni news as always.

Worriers Worldwide   Continuing on the topic of Millennium fandom in action around the world and helping to prove the spirit with which it is imbued, Nam Myoung-Hee wrote to me recently on the topic of broadcasting the series in Korea.  There, Millennium reruns continue to air (albeit sporadically, much like FX) on the NTV cable network.  Korean websites devoted to the series include the beautifully illustrated ZooTV Station, the first ever Korean Millenniun fan page, and Millennium reviews available at April Fool.  Many are worth a visit simply to admire the visuals, enjoyable even if you can't read in Korean.

Around the World   Truth be told, the number of recently updated Millennium fan pages on the internet these days can be counted using the fingers of a single hand.  Fans around the world, however, remain dedicated and there are even a select few non-English websites still being updated for fans outside of the United States.  It was recently announced that season three of the series will begin airing for the first time in German and Austria this May, a new episode each Tuesday night at 11.40pm.  For those of you in that area, Thomas Fuchs' Millennium page will keep you updated on the series and its future.  In the east, the Japanese Phase Millennium continually provides information and exciting new graphics.

Cable Chaos   What has the FX cable network done to Millennium now?  Verifying their policy of disregard for the series and its fans, FX has suspended the airing of Millennium reruns in their 1:00am late night timeslot until April 23rd.  The reason for this displacement?  Although FX's short "Millennium will return..." advertisements tell us very little, new episodes of FX's original comedy Son of the Beach being rerun in the midnight timeslot for most of April are probably to blame.  Check out the Abyss airdates section for info on the newly adjusted scheduled airdates.  Unfortunately for fans trying to videotape the series, the new schedule mangles Millennium's broadcast order and much of the second season will be skipped.  Feel free, as always, to send FX your thoughts on the matter.

Surprised By Sin   Despite the fact that Millennium has been off of the air for nearly two years now, viewers around the world continue to recognize the show's genius.  Looking for some literary food for thought regarding Frank Black's television adventures?  "Surprised by Sin," an engaging Millennium analysis written by David Dark, can be found in the Dark Corners section of sarahmasen.com.  I highly recommend visiting the site and giving this fascinating essay a read.

Lone Gunmen's Last Stand   Panic is starting to set in with the Ten-Thirteen fan community regarding The Lone Gunmen, thanks to the fact that it seems The X-Files audience is nowhere to be found on Friday nights.  USA Today has just posted their annual online "Save Our Show" poll (the same which listed Millennium just about two years ago).  Visit the site to cast your own personal Gunmen decision.  In related news, petition mania is sweeping the web.  Two of the latest online petitions you may wish to add your name to include a Save the Gunmen list and a Harsh Realm DVD list.

Double Dose   Lance Henriksen fans, start your VCRs!  Tonight the Sci-Fi Channel is giving us a double dose of our favorite actor.  At 8:00pm Sci-Fi presents the "Cutting Cards" episode of Tales From the Crypt, in which Lance stars alongside Kevin Tighe as a long time gambler with a score to settle.  Jennifer 8, the 1992 serial killer thriller starring Lance Henriksen, Andy Garcia, Uma Thurman, and John Malkovich, will air at 8:30pm as part of Sci-Fi's week of suspense filled cinema.  Tune in to watch Lance hunt a serial killer long before he was doing it regularly as Frank Black.  The two pieces will then air once again later during the night, Jennifer 8 at midnight and "Cutting Cards" at 2:30am.  Visit Sci-Fi for more complete scheduling information.

A Boy and His Bird   The Crow: Salvation, third installment in the popular horror film series, was never released in theaters but is now available on DVD and VHS.  Long time Millennium writer and third season executive producer Chip Johannessen wrote the film's script while Eric Mabius (the angel Samiel of Millennium's "Borrowed Time") portrays the title role.  Check out the studio's intense Flash site for complete information, including biographies for Chip and Eric, on the DVD.

The Changing Face...   Well, folks, over the past few weeks I became a little dissatisfied with the Millennial Abyss design we've all become accustomed to over the past year.  I've decided that it's time for a change.  This new interface is, hopefully, a bit less cluttered and features a color scheme more appropriate for our favorite series.  Don't worry, though, for I'll still be providing the same daily updated Millennium news and entertainment you've come to expect.  I hope you like the new design.  Enjoy!

MARCH NEWS

New Nightmares   FOX continues to prepare a new science fiction/horror anthology series, Night Visions, for airing later this year.  The talented writing team of Erin Maher and Kay Reindl, who penned such Millennium episodes as "Midnight of the Century" and "Anamnesis," have been doing a good deal of writing for the new show.  Quite similar in tone and format to The Twilight Zone, Night Visions is hosted by punk rocker Henry Rollins and features weekly big name guest stars currently including Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Aidan Quinn, and Brian Dennehy.  Check out FOX's official site for the series.

Semper Fi   This weekend NBC will air a TV movie version of the rejected Dreamworks military drama series Semper Fi.  The film stars Scott Bairstow (Thomas Hobbes of Harsh Realm) and contains appearances by Terry O'Quinn (Millennium's Peter Watts, Harsh Realm's Omar Santiago).  The film was directed by former X-Files producer Michael Watkins.  Those interested in watching it despite its X-Files conflicting timeslot, the film airs this Sunday, April 1st, at 9pm.

Untimely Demise   Rumors are already buzzing around the internet concerning FOX's possible cancellation of The Lone Gunmen.  Although there's been no official indications of this as of yet, it's sadly a very likely possibility considering the show's ratings.  The question is, of course, how many strikes does it take?  What will Chris Carter's attitude towards FOX be after having three of his well developed television series cut short by the network?  What does the future hold for Ten-Thirteen Productions?

Morgan, Wong, and the One   Former Millennium writers and executive producers Glen Morgan and James Wong are making plenty of progress on their feature film careers.  In the aftermath of New Line's Final Destination, that dynamic duo who had so much trouble passing their creative ideas through the television networks seems to be having much greater success producing work for the silver screen.  Shooting has just begun on their latest, sci-fi thriller The One, starring none other than Jet Li.  Click here to check out an excellent, full fledged set report and read plenty of insight from Glen Morgan himself regarding the project.  Meanwhile, the two writers have finished their first draft of After the Visitation, a script adapting the UFO based Russian novella Roadside Picnic.  Says James Wong, the project's likely director, "It's a very emotional story about a father and a daughter, and it's really wonderful. It's adventure. It's action. There's a lot of emotion. ... There's special effects."  More available courtesy the Sci-Fi Wire.  Looks like we have plenty to look forward to from these creative geniuses at the local cineplex.

Dead Men Tell No Tales   Chris Carter is talking in his usual circles, this time regarding his capacity for storytelling.  While telling Salon magazine that he has many more tales to tell in future seasons of The X-Files he noted that his desire to write a wide variety of script themes is what led to the creation of our favorite series.  Says Carter, "That's what Millennium was.  I had done an episode the second year, called 'Irresistible,' about a death fetishist, and I thought it could have worked as an X-Files or on a show like Millennium. I think The Lone Gunmen is born out of all of our love of our funny X-Files episodes and the success of them."  Sadly, Millennium's death brought with it an end to its own unique form of storytelling on television.  We can only hope the Gunmen can avoid the same fate.

Millennium Maestro   While surfing the internet today in search of that wonderful Lone Gunmen theme song I stumbled upon an excellent recent interview with Mark Snow, the man who provided the underscore music for Millennium and has been providing some stand-out work on The Lone Gunmen.  On the subject of Millennium Mark had quite a bit to say. "When they first came to me, they said they wanted the music to depict good and bad, heaven and hell, hope and horror.  I asked them, ‘Which is it more? Is it more dark or more light? Is it more horror than hope, or what?’ And they said ‘Yeah.’ So I came up with this single voice, which turned out to be a solo violin, with this dark percussion accompaniment. I had these folky, Celtic violin solos with the sleek, dark synthesizer rumbling. I’d gotten into more specific dark music with this Celtic contrast, whether it’s solo violin or solo harp or solo woodwind. That seems to have worked well."  The sounds of that solo violin were intended by Snow to represent Frank Black's spirit while those dark synthesizers represent the world around him.  Those interested in reading the complete article should visit The X-Files News Domain and be sure to check out my own interview with the music master regarding his Millennium work.

Run, Lance, Run   In the midst of working on

his three most recent films (The Untold, The Invitation, and The Lost Voyage, all in post production), Lance Henriksen found the time to lend his voice to a new Playstation game.  Run Like Hell (RLH), from Interplay Entertainment's new Digital Mayhem division, co-stars fellow horror legend Brad Dourif (Dennis Hoffman of Millennium's "Force Majeure").  The game is being described as "a science fiction, survival-horror containing real 3D environments with dynamic camera angles throughout which will take place entirely from a third person perspective."  The Playstation 2 game featuring Lance's rather distinct vocal signature is due to be released this spring.  More information is expected soon at Digital Mayhem's official site.

Hasta La Vista, Baby   Lance Henriksen recently told SFX magazine that while James Cameron was developing The Terminator for the big screen he intended for Lance to take the title role!  "Jim and I were going to take into the company to get it done," Lance stated in the interview, "and I said 'I'll go in as the Terminator to make them feel what this movie's going to be like.' I got dressed up and got into the mode of the character and went in and scared the shit outta them. But the thing is, in those days, I was nobody, so when they cast Arnold I didn't care, as long as Jim got his movie done."  Lance certainly feels the film would've been different had he starred.  "My characterizations would have been a lot more frightening.  Arnold was like this bulldozer killing machine and mine would have been more Machiavellian. I always told Jim I wanted to stand in doorways and completely shut down so you would walk by not knowing who or what he was."  Lance was forced to take a smaller supporting role in the final film.  The Terminator is set to be released in a new special edition DVD format in the not too distant future.  The new two disc set will feature plenty of featurettes, deleted scenes, and photo galleries of the film featuring peeks at Lance's contributions.

Comedic Crossover Conspiracy   The Lone Gunmen have taken their first steps forward into primetime.  At a recent online chat with the writers of the show, Millennium fan Jim Riley asked an interesting crossover question.  "Could we possibly see Frank Black appear?  That interaction would be a riot!"  Vince Gilligan responded favorably with, "That would be great because of course Frank Black is a hilarious character.  Actually he would be a pretty good straight man, come to think of it."  The possibilities of seeing Lance Henriksen in future episodes of The X-Files and The Lone Gunmen are still wide open.  Thanks for the efforts, Jim.

Company Men   Word has come to me from anonymous sources that former Millennium writer/producers Glen Morgan and James Wong, in addition to their recent work on some upcoming major motion pictures (The One, After the Visitation), have been developing two new television pilots in accordance with their DreamWorks contract.  Boulevards of '68, although very similar in theme to the cable hit The Sopranos, was conceived by the duo long before the HBO series' premiere and reportedly differs quite a bit tonally.  The second pilot in the works, Company Man, was written by Daniel Arkin and supervised by Morgan and Wong and concerns a young man who is recruited to work for the CIA.  No word yet on a start of production for either pilot.  The Abyss will keep you updated on Morgan and Wong future work.

Silver Screen Speculation   Both Chris Carter and Lance Henriksen are eager to bring Frank Black to the silver screen in a Millennium feature film.  What does Ten-Thirteen Productions president Frank Spotnitz think about the idea?  "You know, I don’t know. I know it’s something that Chris would like to do and Lance Henriksen would like to do, so it’s really like if your audience is there to support the idea. I wouldn’t say it’s impossible."  I think that it's time the Millennium fan community made another effort to let their voice be heard.  We're here, and we're waiting!

Gunmen Left Alone   Sadly, some things never change.  Although the FOX network is prepared to debut The Lone Gunmen in The X-Files' regular timeslot on March 4th, the following week the new Ten-Thirteen television series will settle into its regularly scheduled Friday night timeslot on March 16th.  As all Millennium fans remember all too clearly, a low ratings Friday night timeslot is what led both Millennium and Harsh Realm towards untimely death.

Breaking the Silence...   Need I remind, Millennium fans heading to the movie theater won't want to miss seeing the superb Anthony Hopkins reprise his role as that most famous of fictional serial killers, Dr. Hannibal Lector, in Hannibal.  The stylish and gory Ridley Scott film, despite poor critical reviews, has broken several box office records this weekend by bringing in an astounding $58 million during its opening weekend.  After seeing the film you might find yourself dreaming of an encounter between Hannibal the Cannibal and the greatest fictional profiler of them all, Frank Black.  Dream no more... The two come face to face in the brilliantly written "Drinking Buddies" by M. Stephen Lukac, available here in the Abyss fiction archive.  Enjoy it with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

Happy Birthday, Abyss!   It's February and that means its time to say "Happy Birthday!" to the Millennial Abyss website.  First uploaded to the net back in February of 1997, during Millennium's first season, the Abyss is now four years old.  We've been through plenty of changes since that first internet incarnation but one thing remains constant: I continue to do my best to ensure that the spirit and the memory of one of television's greatest examples of dramatic art lives on.  Thanks for all your support over the years, folks!

Frank's Future   Lance Henriksen is undoubtedly interested in the future of Frank Black's character.  While talking with SFX magazine recently he spoke once again of a possible Millennium movie. "Chris wants to do a movie based on Millennium. Probably not calling it Millennium, but using that character. He's talked about that and it's in the air."  Lance would also like Frank to reappear on The X-Files, specifically alongside Agent Doggett.  "I'd like to work with Robert Patrick in The X-Files, but nobody's approached me about it. I like Robert a lot. We did a film together years ago, but he's a really cool guy. I'd love to go back on The X-Files."  Whether or not either of these projects moves forward in the future, at least Lance is willing to be along for the ride!

Patience is a Virtue   Lots of net buzz regarding the news, first reported here on the Abyss straight from Mark Snow's mouth (December 23rd), that FOX has disallowed our favorite composer to release a Millennium CD in favor of launching its own soundtrack music centered website.  Mark Snow's manager, Robert Urband, has recently lent his comments to the situation.  "Unfortunately, Fox retracted its permission to let Mark release the CD on his own. Fox anticipates starting its own internet site where it will sell CDs from its various soundtracks. They are immoveable about this.  The good news is I just spent some time with Fox's head of publishing and the Fox website has been launched. I will know soon when they plan to offer [the Millennium soundtrack] for sale."  All this news can be found, along with plenty of Abyss hype, at Fandom's The Ultimate X-Files Information Complex and the Mark Snow fan site Encore.

The Real World   Some new information on The World of Ted Serios, the long in development film from Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz.  Spotnitz, who is co-writing the script for Dimension Films, states, "They’re really waiting for us, very patiently, because we’re late, to write the script. What we’ve been doing in our spare time is amass research, because this, unlike anything we’ve done before, is based on a true story, and we want to be respectful of the real people and the real historical events... We read the book and we were immediately drawn to it -- despite the fact that it has a lot to do with The X-Files. Honestly, we were weren’t looking to do something that close to The X-Files as a movie. But what really intrigued us about it was that one, it was a real-life X-File..."  Carter is expected to direct the final film, about a man capable of psychic photography.  For more info and lengthier quotes be sure to visit Cinescape.

Carter Continues   Could it be that time again, even with The Lone Gunmen premiere just around the corner?  Is it time for a new Chris Carter television series?  Another Ten-Thirteen Production series is in the works, says Carter.  While talking to the Hartford Courant recently Carter mentioned, "It's something I've been thinking about for a long time and I'm very anxious to do it."  What's it about?  In typical Carter fashion he will only say that the new series is "about everything" and that "it would take a lot of lessons learned from The X-Files and try to employ them."  Carter, and the fans, still clearly remember FOX's treatment of Harsh Realm, however, and the creator is making it clear that a possible ninth season of The X-Files and the fate of his new series depend on how well the FOX network treats The Lone Gunmen series in the coming months.  Time will tell.

Last Night was Lance Night!   Last night, while channel surfing, I bumped into Lance Henriksen... multiple times!  The TBS series Dinner & a Movie was airing The Quick and the Dead, the western in which Lance portrays deadly quick draw showman "Ace".  As it turns out, Mr. Henriksen was the Dinner & a Movie guest for the evening!  Lance was his usual shy self, sharing a few jokes and trivia with the hosts before bowing out early in the evening, shortly after his death scene.  Lance jokingly commented the movie was all downhill from that point forward.  Later on in the evening I found Lance as the sadistic villain "Chains" in the brutal action film Stone Cold.  With a film career as extensive as Lance Henriksen's, its hard to navigate cable TV without bumping into him on any given night.  I will monitor TBS' schedule and mention, here on the Abyss, any further Dinner & a Movie airings of The Quick and the Dead.

The New Horseman   If you haven't had a peek yet, check out the completely revamped Fourthhorseman.com homepage.  I'm transforming the page into something a lot more personalized than I usually create.  Updates should become daily there as well, so next time you're surfing over to the Abyss for your daily dose of Millennium news do me a favor and come in by the front door, Fourthhorseman.com.

Big Screen Brittany   "Detective Jerry Black

has made a promise he can't break, to catch a killer he can't find."  The new film The Pledge, starring Jack Nicholson and directed by Sean Penn, looks like it could be quite a treat for Millennium fans.  The plot revolves around a retiring police chief (with the last name of Black, how about that!) who pledges to catch the murderer of a young girl.  Best of all, Brittany Tiplady (Millennium's Jordan Black) hits the big screen for the first time!  Could her character, Becky Fiske, be the victim?  Let's hope this is only the beginning of a long and successful career for our favorite young actress.  The Pledge opens January 19th.  Visit the films official site for more details.

Forces of Nature   "Someone turned the clouds to frost, sent crystal bullets raining down.  Someone cast a cold white blanket over frozen winter's giving ground."  The Millennial Abyss' exclusive series of artistic calendar images goes poetic as winter continues with January.  This month's powerful image accompanied by poetic verse definitely carries with it an atmospheric feel, the genuine chill of winter.  See what electronic artist J. F. Barrera has created for your computer desktop this month by clicking over to the CALENDAR.

01 or the Other?   2001 is here, we survived past New Year.  The question that everyone loves discussing, of course, is whether or not this was the true turning of the millennium.  Personally, I tire of discussing this math based matter (in case you can't tell, I'm a literature person... numbers frighten me).  There are plenty of interesting online articles outlining this very debate.  Check out CNN or Astronomy Boy for the fact based issues if you're interested.  Another site you'll definitely want to see is Millennium Hell ("Sneering at Two Thousand Years of Human Achievement").  This amusing collection features a baloney based "Millennium Hype-o-Meter", prophecies, Y2K tips, and quite a spin on recent news.  Spend some time there as I try to pull myself back together and create some Abyss updates for the coming week.
